With mixed feelings Bernard walked back to the cottage. He felt glad that he’d achieved something, but it was a gladness he’d rather have shared. Indeed it had to be shared—with Marie. But a dark cloud now hung over his relationship with her, the memory of her unexpected return home last night.

Those simple words, “Hello, I’m back,” stuck in his mind now as uncomfortably as they’d stuck in the distance between them when she’d entered the room.

How could he hope to explain? If he were chivalrous enough to claim all responsibility for the affair, he would lower himself in Marie’s eyes in one way. If he blamed everything on Eve’s crude initiatives, he might well lower himself in her eyes even more in another way.

Underneath his apprehension ran a curious thread of hope. A state of misunderstanding with Marie was somehow unthinkable. By temperament she had a vested interest in clarity. Surely the news he brought from Godfreys’ would unite the two of them in a common search for a new home.

Brooding on the curious developments of the last hour or so, he suddenly realized he’d never read the folded leaflet Dr. Fisher had handed him when the application form was suddenly stamped. Bernard pulled the brochure from his pocket and studied it as he walked.
